Part Ten And Epilogue
Quotations
"After perhaps thirty meters, just as a soldier turned around, the girl was felled. Hands were clamped upon her from behind and the boy next door brought her down. He forced her knees to the road and suffered the penalty. He collected her punches as if they were presents. Her bony hands and elbows were accepted with nothing but a few short moans. He accumulated the load, clumsy specks of saliva and tears as if they were lovely to his face, and more important, he was able to hold her down."--Death Part Ten (515)
When Liesel finds Max she gets upset, after she gets whipped for walking with him, and tries to run back after him. Rudy grabs her and holds her down so that she cannot go after him and get into anymore trouble. This shows how much Rudy truly loves Liesel. It shows that he would take the pain if it meant her safety and it meant that she would not get into more trouble.

"I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right"--Liesel Part Ten (528)
Liesel has become upset with the world, because she has found Max going to a concentration camp. She begins to hate words, because they are what has brought her so close to people and now those people are gone. She is saying that words have brought her joy and pain and now she hopes that she has fixed what she has done wrong.

"The man was positively mugged and beaten to a glass-shattering pulp. I stepped on him on the way out."--Death Part Ten (530)
In Frau Diller's store there is a picture of Hitler and when Himmel Street was bombed the store was destroyed. When Death was going through to collect Frau Diller he made sure to step on the fallen picture of Hitler. This is Death pretty showing his hatred for Hitler. He has explained how he does not like war and Hitler is the cause of this war and so he does not like Hitler. He says that war is like a new boss and, obviously, Death does not like his new boss. This is just a way for Death to defy his boss and show that he does not care for Hitler at all.

This is what Himmel Street might have looked like after it was bombed.
This picture reminds me of how the Jews had to walk through Molching to get to Dachau.

Thoughts and Response
This part of the book is probably the saddest part of the entire book. everyone dies. She finally kisses Rudy, but he is dead. Hans and Rosa are dead. Everyone. This just breaks my heart. Liesel lost a lot of people before the bombing but now she has truly lost everyone. Luckily Max lives and she is able to see him again. They have a small embrace, but that is all that is said about him. Ilsa Hermann takes Liesel in, which is so nice of her! She honestly loves Liesel and sees her as her own child.
When Liesel dies when she is older it is definitely interesting. Not the way she dies but how death shows her the book she wrote. He has kept it all this time and now he shows it to her. This means a lot to her and when she asks him if he understood it he says that he is haunted by humans. I'm not completely sure what he means by that but I do know that he does not understand humans and why they do bad things to each other.
