Part Nine
Quotations
"Certainly, war meant dying, but it always shifted the ground beneath a person's feet when it was someone who had once lived and breathed in close proximity."--Death Part Nine (467)
This is when Michael Holtzapfel told Rosa about his younger brother's death. She staggered and became very upset. Death is saying that no one really cares about people dying in war until it was someone you use to know. He is saying that things like this don't really bother people til it hits home.

"Rosa would never tell Hans about these moments, but Liesel believed that it must have been those prayers that helped Papa survive the LSE's accident in Essen. If they didn't help, they certainly can't have hurt."--Death Part Nine (474)
Rosa had prayed in the kitchen about bringing Hans home alive and Liesel watched her pray. This shows a side of Rosa we don't typically see. She is upset and at a vulnerable stage as she prays for Hans safety. Liesel thinks that her praying brought Hans home and even if it didn't, it didn't keep him away from home for long.

"She did not back away or try to fight me, but I know that something told the girl I was there. Could she smell my breath? Could she hear my cursed circular heartbeat, revolving like the crime it is in my deathly chest? I don't know, but she knew me and she looked me in my face and she did not look away."--Death Part Nine (490)
When the man in the airplane died after the bombing Death came to collect his body and saw the book thief again. And when he did she did not look away. She knew he was there and that he had come to take the man from the plane. This girl has seen so many people die that she knows now pretty much who Death is and she shows that she is not afraid of him.

Images
This picture reminds of when Hans and some of the men in the LSE were playing poker and Hans was winning a bunch.
This picture reminds me of the plane that crashed after the bombing and Rudy and Liesel went to go check it out. They found a man dying and gave him a teddy bear as he passed away.

Thoughts and Response
In this part a stronger connection forms between Ilsa Hermann and Liesel. Ilsa leaves cookies out waiting for Liesel to come and take them, along with a book. They have moment of discussion about the book and the library before Rudy insists they leave. (Oh Rudy, way to ruin the moment)
Hans is out cleaning up all these dead bodies and on his way to the next clean up site Reinhold makes him trade places with him in the vehicle. (yay!) The reason they switched seats is because earlier Hans was winning poker and Reinhold was losing and he did not like the fact that he was losing. (what a sore loser) If they had not switched seats Hans could have died when the truck flipped, but instead of dying he broke his leg. Even though that sounds awful that is about the greatest news Hans could receive at this time. He could finally go home!
When Liesel receives the news she tells Rudy and poor Rudy is happy for her but he is still upset about his own father. He is so upset that he wants to go the expensive houses in Molching and steal from them. (He is so upset he doesn't know what to do anymore! So sad!!)
