Part Six
Quotations
"To me, war is like the new boss who expects the impossible. He stands over your shoulder repeating one thing, incessantly: "Get it done, get it done". So you work harder. You get the job done. The boss, however, does not thank you. He asks for more."--Death Part Six (309)
This is Death showing his perspective of war. He talks about how war takes so much and only asks for more, which is talking about death. The people in war only ask for death and Death has to come around and pick up all the souls of the dead people and that takes a lot of work, so he sees it as a big job in a new workplace.

"It must have been one of the few moments when the girl was not there with him, for all I saw was a man in bed. I knelt. I readied myself to insert my hands through the blankets. Then there was a resurgence-an immense struggle against my weight. I withdrew, and with so much work ahead of me, it was nice to be fought off in that dark little room. I even managed a short, closed-eyed pause of serenity before I made my way out."--Death Part Six (317-318)
Death is telling us the part about when Max was very sick and he began to die. Death tells us that Max fought off death and would not die and Death was happy to see that someone was finally not accepting him.

"Buy you'll come and get me if he wakes up, won't you? Just make something up. Scream out like I've done something wrong. Start swearing at me. Everyone will believe it, don't worry."--Liesel Part Six (319)
Max is sick in bed and Liesel has been sitting at his side for weeks. Rosa finally makes Liesel go outside and play soccer with the other kids so people won't get suspicious. Liesel tells her mother to come tell her if he wakes up, but she also tells her to yell at her when she does. The reason Liesel says this is because everyone knows that Rosa Hubermann yells at Liesel a lot, so when she comes to get her she has to make sure things don't look suspicious.

Thoughts and Response
In this part the Hubermanns, Liesel, and Max really seem to bond while making a snowman. This brings them all a little bit closer. After making the snowman Max begins to get very sick. Liesel blames herself for him becoming sick, when it wasn't her fault. The Hubermanns have to discuss what to do with Max if he dies, which would put their lives in more danger. Liesel brings Max a bunch of items, which I don't really understand why, but she seems to think that it will bring him back, but it doesn't really make sense.
Once Max is better the family then has to worry about the basement checking for bomb shelters. Liesel was very smart and scraped her knee on the ground to get to Hans quicker without things looking suspicious. She was able to get Hans to come out and get her and that's when he realized what the Nazi Party was looking for. The Hubermanns were able to hide Max before the people came in to check their basement and thank goodness their basement wasn't deep enough to be a bomb shelter.
