My Overall Response
The Book Thief gave me a new perspective on death and also a new perspective on the people in Germany during WWII. I enjoyed having the book narrated by Death; it gave the reader a different way to see things that were happening in the novel. This book also showed me that not everyone in Germany, during WWII, was a Nazi set on getting rid of the Jews. It let me see that even during bad times in bad places there are still good people doing their best to stand against what is wrong.
I am the kind of person that always has her nose stuck in a book. I love to read and being given a book to read for school is just perfect. Before reading The Book Thief I was unsure if this was going to be a good book. Usually when books are assigned they aren't very good, but this book is just amazing. It never has a dull moment and there is a little something for everyone, like action, mystery, and even a little romance. After reading the novel I was definitely pleased. It was finally nice to have read a book for school that wasn't boring or hard to keep up with.
There were many themes and motifs in the novel. War, friendship and love, and the power of words are just a few. The themes throughout the novel brought in many emotions. It made the reader feel sad for some characters and then hate others. The themes of the novel made me think a little and also gave me a new way to look at events and characters in the novel. The way words were used in the novel relates to the reader and lets them see that there is a lot of power behind just a few words and with those words you can change a lot. Friendship and love in the novel also helps the reader see in times of struggle your true friends are there for you and they will help you up and protect you when things get tough.
I find that some of the characters in the novel were a little different and interesting. Rudy, for instance. He is an athletic and smart kid but is also an innocent kid who does not understand what is going on around him. He isn't afraid of girls, like most boys his age, and he isn't afraid to stick up for those he cares about. Liesel is also interesting. She is just a young girl but has become to act like an adult. She knows how to hold her own and has determination. It is hard to find people who are so determined on such a little thing like reading. I feel like Hans made an impact on me. He is a gentleman and kind and compassionate person. He cares for Rosa, even though she can be a little mean, and he loves Liesel. He cares for his family and he would do anything for them. He also takes care of other people and gives them safety, even though it is dangerous. He showed me that when you believe that something is wrong that it is okay to disagree and sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe is right.
I don't think I would change anything about the novel. Everything in the novel has a purpose to explain something or set up for something later. It is very straightforward, which is much different from other books, and that just makes it better. The way everything was described or explained was perfect and it was like I was there myself. The way the characters interacted was very cool and the way the novel flowed was just perfect.
I would have to say that this is definitely a book I would share with my friends. The book is during a time in history and has a lot on historic events. The book flows well and it always has something happening to make you just want to keep reading. It is something that when you pick it up you can't set it down til you are done, and it would the perfect book to read in your spare time. This book also has a lot of history which can make it important for students to read. It also shows that not everyone is bad in a place like Germany during WWII.
